Electrical Garden Shredder Not Starting
Quick Answer
If your electric garden shredder won't start, first check that it is connected to a working power supply, the container safety switch is in the ON position, and the standby LED is illuminated red. If the overload protection has tripped, reset it before attempting to restart the machine.
Tip: The shredder will not operate if the collection container is not correctly fitted or the safety switch is not engaged.
Before You Begin
For your safety:
- Switch the machine off before carrying out any inspections.
- Disconnect the shredder from the mains power supply.
- Wear suitable protective gloves when checking the cutting area.
- Never attempt to bypass any safety devices.
Before Switching On
Before pressing the ON button, check that:
- The Standby LED (13) is illuminated red.
- The Function Selection Switch (9) is set to either Forward or Reverse.
- The collection container is fully inserted.
- The container safety switch is engaged.

The Standby LED Is Not Lit
If the standby LED is not illuminated red, the machine will not start.
Check the following:
1. Check the Power Supply
Ensure the shredder is plugged into a working mains socket.
Inspect the:
- Power cable.
- Plug.
- Extension lead (if used).
- Socket outlet.
If any component is damaged, do not use the machine.
Important: Damaged electrical components must only be repaired or replaced by a qualified technician.
2. Check the Container Safety Switch
The shredder will not operate unless the collection container is correctly fitted.
Check that:
- The collection container is fully inserted.
- The Safety Switch is in the ON (Up) position.
If the switch is in the OFF (Down) position, move it to the ON position.
3. Reset the Overload Protection
If the shredder has been overloaded, the overload protection may trip to protect the motor.
This commonly happens when shredding material that is too thick or feeding material too quickly.
To reset the machine:
- Allow the motor to cool if necessary.
- Press the Overload Reset Button.
- Restart the shredder.
4. Check the Function Selection Switch
Ensure the Function Selection Switch is set to either:
- Forward for normal shredding.
- Reverse if clearing a blockage.
If the selector is between positions, the shredder may not operate.
