What is a Cord Strain Relief?
A cord strain relief is a built-in hook or retention device located near the power cable connection point. It secures the cable and prevents accidental unplugging if the cable is pulled during operation.
Benefits
- Reduces stress on the electrical connection
- Helps protect cables from damage
Before fitting the cord strain relief:
- Ensure the product is switched OFF.
- Confirm the extension cable is unplugged from the mains supply.
- Inspect both cables for damage.
Warning: Never connect or disconnect electrical cables with wet hands.
Step 1: Locate the Cord Strain Relief
Find the cord strain relief hook on the machine.
It is typically located:
- Near the power cable connection
- Below the handle assembly
Refer to your product manual if you are unsure of its location.
Step 2: Form a Loop in the Extension Cable
Take the end of the cable and create a small loop.
Tips
- The loop should be large enough to fit around the strain relief hook.
- Avoid twisting or knotting the cable.
- Ensure the cable remains untangled.
Step 3: Pass the Loop Through the Strain Relief
Insert the cable loop through the opening or around the strain relief hook.
The loop should pass completely through the retention point while leaving the connector free.
Checkpoint
- The loop should move freely without excessive tension.
- The connector should remain accessible.
Step 4: Secure the Loop Around the Hook
Place the loop over the strain relief hook or retention device.
Gently pull the cable until the loop tightens against the hook.
Step 5: Test the Installation
Before connecting to the mains supply:
- Hold the cable gently.
- Apply a light pull.
- Check that the strain relief retains the cable.
- Ensure the plug connection remains secure.
Step 7: Connect to the Power Supply
Once the strain relief is fitted correctly:
- Plug the cable into a suitable power outlet.
- Ensure the cable is routed away from the cutting or operating area.
- Keep the cable behind you during use.
