My Petrol Chainsaw chain will not move when I rev the engine

Modified on Fri, 12 Jun at 12:07 PM

This article explains the checks you can carry out if the engine runs but the chain does not move when the throttle is applied.

⚠️ Safety Notice

Ensure the chainsaw is switched off before carrying out any inspection or maintenance.

Wear suitable protective gloves when handling the chain.

Possible Causes & Basic Checks

Check the Chain Brake

The most common cause of a stationary chain is an engaged chain brake.

  • Pull the chain brake lever backwards towards the front handle to disengage the chain brake.
  • When disengaged, the chain should be able to move freely.
  • If the chain brake is pushed forwards, the chain will be locked and unable to rotate.

Check the Chain Tension

  • Ensure the chain is correctly tensioned.
  • When properly adjusted, you should be able to pull a chain link slightly away from the guide bar while the drive links remain engaged in the guide groove.
  • A chain that is too tight or too loose can affect operation.

Check the Chain and Guide Bar

  • Inspect the chain and guide bar for signs of wear or damage.
  • If either component is damaged, it should be replaced before further use.

Chain Tension Information

Chain tension will vary depending on operating temperature:

  • A cold chain may appear slightly looser before use.
  • As the chain warms during operation, it will expand and require periodic tension checks.
  • Always adjust the chain according to the instructions in your owner's manual.

If the Issue Persists

If the chain still does not move after completing the checks above, please contact our Technical Support Team for further assistance.

✔️ Summary

  • Ensure the chain brake is disengaged
  • Check the chain is correctly tensioned
  • Inspect the chain and guide bar for damage
  • Monitor chain tension as the chain warms up
