My Petrol Chainsaw will not lubricate the chain

Modified on Fri, 12 Jun at 12:10 PM

This article explains the basic checks to carry out if your petrol chainsaw is not oiling the chain correctly.

⚠️ Safety Notice

Ensure the chainsaw is switched off before carrying out any inspection or maintenance.

Do not operate the chainsaw without chain oil, as this can cause serious damage to the chain and guide bar.

Important Oil Information

Your chainsaw is designed to use a lightweight chain oil.

  • Oils labelled as “anti-fling” or “extra-tacky” may be too thick, especially in colder conditions, and may not flow correctly.
  • Suitable alternatives include SAE30 oil, or automotive oils such as 5W30 or 10W30.

Basic Checks

  • Ensure you are using proper chain lubricating oil.
  • Refill the chain oil reservoir each time you refuel the chainsaw.
  • Check that the oiling port is not blocked or clogged.
  • Inspect for any visible oil leaks.

Checking Chain Oil Flow

To confirm whether oil is being delivered to the chain:

  1. Start the chainsaw.
  2. Run the chain at a medium speed.
  3. Hold the chainsaw at an angle towards the ground.
  4. You should see oil being ejected and a light trace left on the surface.

Adjusting Oil Flow

On some models, oil flow can be adjusted:

  1. Switch off the chainsaw.
  2. Locate the oil adjustment point on the underside or side of the machine near the clutch.
  3. Use a screwdriver to increase or decrease the oil flow setting.
  4. Restart the chainsaw and recheck oil delivery.

Important Notes

  • The oil reservoir should nearly empty at the same rate as the fuel tank during normal use.
  • Always refill the oil reservoir whenever you refuel the chainsaw.

If the Issue Persists

If no oil is being delivered at all after completing the checks above, there may be a blockage or fault in the oil delivery system. In this case, please contact our Technical Support Team for further assistance.

✔️ Summary

  • Use correct chain oil (avoid overly thick oils)
  • Refill oil tank with every fuel refill
  • Check oil ports for blockages or leaks
  • Test oil flow at medium speed
  • Adjust oil flow if applicable
